Taig Mill Lead Nuts

Nick's Taig Lathe and Milling Machine Blog: January 2011

The split nut housing presented no problems, just mill and drill. Because as much metal as possible was req'd to chuck the work piece securely, turning down the the base to make a 2" diam., cylinder that is 0.130" deep, then under cutting at 45 degs was the next job, it was as entertaining as always mounting the work in the 4JC.”

Other accessories mount directly to the mill table, and are completely interchangeable, as long as you have the right T-nuts, studs, and clamp nuts. The exception to this is the Sherline riser blocks that mount the Z axis higher, and the stepper motor mounts -- those are Sherline specific; however Taig does have it's own motor mounts available

The Sherline will frequently drop the z axis into a part with varying unpleasant consequences. The lead screws on the Sherline are tiny and if you do rapid moves especially on the Y axis they will whip around and beat on the mill unless you add a restraint. The Taig moves at 60 inches per minute without a tremor.

The gibs are the movable part of the dove tail on your head stock where is slides on the ways. I am not sure how Taig does it on their mill. On my Taig lathe there are two screws with lock nuts on the back side of the saddle. To tighten or losen the gibbs you losen the nuts and either backout the screws or tighten them as needed.

The ballscrew for the Z axis is a 10mm, 2mm lead screw. They can be had for very little on . I picked up a dozen or so for $30/each. The X/Y screws are C5 THK 12mm 5mm lead screws. I also got them on , and the angular contact bearings for them came from VXB since the screws were ground to 7mm (instead of 8mm).

If the backlash still seems a little high, and anything over 0.25mm is probably excessive, then it may be necessary to dismantle that axis again and check the adjustment of the lead screw nut. it is possible to remove the y axis assembly completely in order to readjust that nut without touching the x axis setting.

The lead screw on the taig Y axis has 0.75" that is unused, this spacer will use that. This will upgrade your mill from 5.5 inches of Y travel to 6.25 inches a 13% increase. If you go beyond 0.75" (you can do just over 1") you will not be able to mill hard materials like metals without excessive chatter and other undesirable effects that will

Taig Lathe - Ronin Engineer

The Taig is really the modern equivalent of a watchmakers lathe in many ways. Even early bench lathes often only had compound rests and no lead screws. See some of the Lindsay books on the lathe. The modern thread cutting lathe didn't totally dominate until maybe the 30s or 40s, hard for me to tell. 19. Is there quick change tooling for the Taig.

Taig Mill: Table Stops

Taig Mill – Table Stops. Every once in a while, a discussion forum member will ask about the little post in front of the mill table. What's it for? Here's an answer. By making these adjustable stops, you have the means to limit movement of the table's X axis. An aside: the other thing to think about is the cap screw just below the post.

How do you keep a Hobby CNC Mill maintained?

A good guide for setting up a taig mill can be seen with this link. Repair damage to the table surface. If you damage the surface of your table you will need to fix it. If you accidentally plunge an endmill into your table it can kick up a burr. Just clamping parts to the machine can put minor dings in the table.

Installing the Y Axis Extension Kit on the Taig Mill

The ¾´ extension of the Y axis table travel on the Taig mill is made possible by the fact that the lead screw on the Y axis is longer than needed for the 5 ½´ stock Y axis travel. Additionally, the Y axis ways are long enough to accommodate the additional travel. The saddle ways will overhang the fixed ways by a small amount when

I have 2 TAIG mills sitting around and as awesome as these little machines are, two things I could never get past are the backlash in the leadscrews and what a pain they are to lubricate.
